According to Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education, below are the required skills and abilities for HSK 4 learners.
・Verbal communication abilities: Possesses certain listening, speaking, reading, writing abilities, and preliminary translation skills. Can engage in basic, complete, coherent, and effective social communication on relatively complex topics in daily life, study, work, etc.
・Topics and tasks: Topics include community life, health conditions, campus life, daily office tasks, animals, plants, etc. Can complete communicative tasks related to these topics, such as explaining a simple medical condition and communicating with a doctor during a medical visit; able to write simple part-time job advertisements and respond to inquiries from others.
・Quantitative criteria: 724 syllables (116 newly added), 1200 characters (300 newly added), 3245 words (1000 newly added), 286 grammar points (76 newly added).
Able to understand informal dialogues or speeches (within 400 characters) primarily involving Level 4 topic tasks, with dialogues or speeches pronounced naturally, with slight regional accents, and at a normal pace (180-200 characters per minute). Can avoid unnecessary repetition, pauses, and other factors, accurately extracting main information. Able to grasp implied meanings and cultural elements mentioned in dialogues or speeches.
Able to master the syllables indicated for Level 4, with pronunciation basically accurate and intonation relatively natural. Can use vocabulary and grammar relevant to this level to accomplish related topic expressions and communicative tasks. Possesses preliminary ability to express in paragraphs, capable of using some relatively complex sentence structures to narrate event development, describe more intricate scenes, briefly state viewpoints and express emotions, engage in general conversations, express relatively fluently, and use words relatively accurately.
Able to accurately recognize the syllables, characters, and words involved in Level 4 language quantitative indicators. Can read language materials (within 500 characters) related to Level 4 topic tasks and within the grammatical scope of this level. Reading speed should not be less than 140 characters per minute. Can understand general compound sentences, read descriptive and explanatory language materials, and simple argumentative essays, grasp key information, make appropriate inferences, and have a basic understanding of related cultural factors. Preliminarily masters skills such as skimming, guessing associations, and overcoming obstacles in fast reading.
Able to master 100 characters from the intermediate handwritten character chart. Has a basic understanding of the structural features of characters. Can use simple sentence patterns for paragraph expressions. Within a specified time, able to complete simple descriptive and explanatory written materials with a word count of no less than 300 characters. Basic correctness in word usage, sentence structures with certain variations, content basically complete, expression relatively clear. Can accomplish common styles of application writing with basic accuracy in format.
Possesses preliminary translation skills, able to translate Level 4 topic tasks, with content basically complete, and aware of cultural factors involved in translation. Able to complete informal reception and simple accompanying interpretation tasks, expressing fluently. Can translate written language materials such as descriptive and explanatory content, with translations mostly accurate.

・言語交際能力:具備一定的聽、說、讀、寫能力和初步的翻譯能力。能夠就較複雜的日常生活、學習、工作等話題進行基本完整、連貫、有效的社會交際。
・話題任務內容:話題涉及社區生活、健康狀況、校園生活、日常辦公、動物、植物等。能夠完成與之相關的交際任務,例如:能夠在就醫時簡單說明病情,與醫生溝通;能夠編寫簡單的兼職廣告,回復對方的問詢。
・語言量化指標:音節724個(新增116),漢字1200個(新增300),詞語3245個(新增1000),語法點286個(新增76)。
聽
能夠聽懂涉及四級話題任務內容的非正式對話或講話(400字以內),對話或講話發音自然、略有方音、語速正常(180-200字/分鐘)。能夠規避其中不必要的重複、停頓等因素的影響,準確獲取主要資訊。能夠聽出言外之意,意識到對話或講話中涉及的文化因素。
說
能夠學握四級語言量化指標的音節,發音基本準確,語調比較自然。能夠使用本級所涉及的詞彙和語法,完成相關的話題表達和交際任務。具備初步的成段表達能力,能夠使用一些比較複雜的句式敘述事件發展、描述較為複雜的情景、簡要陳述觀點和表達感情,進行一般性交談,表達比較流利,用詞比較準確。
讀
能夠准確認讀四級語言量化指標涉及的音節、漢字和詞彙。能夠讀涉及本級話題任務內容的、語法基本不超出本級範圍的語言材料(500字以內),閱讀速度不低於140字/分鐘。能夠理解一般複句,讀懂敘述性、說明性等語言材料及簡單的議論文,理解主要內容,把握關鍵資訊,並做出適當推斷,基本瞭解所涉及的文化因素。初步掌握快速閱讀、猜測聯想、跳躍障礙等閱讀技能。
寫
能夠掌握中等手寫漢字表中的漢字100個。能夠基本學握漢字的結構特點。能夠使用簡單的句式。進行語段表達,在規定時間內,完成簡單的敘述性、說明性等語言材料的寫作,字數不低於300字。用詞基本正確,句式有一定的變化,內容基本完整,表達比較清楚。能夠完成常見的應用文體寫作,格式基本正確。
譯
具備初步的翻譯能力,能夠就本級話題任務內容進行翻譯,內容基本完整,能夠意識到翻譯中涉及的文化因素。能夠完成非正式場合的接待和簡單陪同口譯任務,表達基本流利。能夠翻譯簡單的敘述性和說明性等書面語言材料,譯文大體準確。
