(2023 Updated) HSK 3 Exam Breakdown: What skills do I need to pass?

According to Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education, below are the required skills and abilities for HSK 3 learners.

・Verbal communication abilities: Possesses general listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. Can engage in short communication on basic daily life, study, and work topics and complete routine social interactions.

・Topics and tasks: Topics include travel experiences, course situations, literary activities, holiday customs, education, professions, etc. Can complete communicative tasks related to these topics, such as discussing travel arrangements and holiday customs for traditional festivals like the Spring Festival; able to issue relatively formal oral or written invitations and respond to others' invitations.

・Quantitative criteria: 608 syllables (140 newly added), 900 characters (300 newly added), 2245 words (973 newly added), 210 grammar points (81 newly added).

HSK 3 Listening

Able to understand dialogues (within 300 characters) primarily involving Level 3 topic tasks, consisting mainly of longer single sentences and simple compound sentences, with dialogues or speeches pronounced with a basic standard, clear voice, and a pace close to normal (not less than 180 characters per minute). Can comprehend and acquire main information with the assistance of changes in tone, intonation, and speech rate.

HSK 3 Speaking

Able to master the syllables indicated for Level 3, with pronunciation generally correct. Can use vocabulary and grammar relevant to this level to accomplish related topic expressions and communicative tasks. Possesses ordinary oral expression ability, capable of using a small number of relatively complex sentence patterns for simple communication or discussion.

HSK 3 Reading

Able to accurately recognize the syllables, characters, and words involved in Level 3 language quantitative indicators. Can read language materials (within 300 characters) related to Level 3 topic tasks and within the grammatical scope of this level. Reading speed should not be less than 120 characters per minute. Able to understand simple compound sentences, read descriptive and explanatory language materials, and comprehend the general idea and detailed information of articles. Can use dictionaries to understand the meanings of new words. Preliminarily possesses scanning and skimming reading skills.

HSK 3 Writing

Able to master 300 characters from the elementary handwritten character chart. Has a relatively proficient understanding of stroke order and writing rules for various punctuation marks. Can accurately copy characters at a speed of no less than 20 characters per minute. Possesses general written expression ability, able to engage in simple written communication, and write emails, notices, and short descriptive essays within a specified time, with a word count of no less than 200 characters. Sentences are generally coherent and express basic clarity.

以下是《國際中文教育中文水準等級標準》（以下簡稱《標準》）要求HSK 3學習者的語言能力：

・言語交際能力：具備一般的聽、說、讀、寫能力。能夠就基本的日常生活、學習和工作話題進行簡短的交流，完成日常的社會交際。

・話題任務內容：話題涉及出行經歷、課程情況、文體活動、節日習俗、教育、職業等。能夠完成與之相關的交際任務，例如：能夠與人交流有關春節等傳統節日的出行安排及節日習俗；能夠發出比較正式的口頭或書面邀請，回應別人的邀請。

・語言量化指標：音節608個(新增140)，漢字900個(新增300)，詞語2245個(新增973)，語法點210個(新增81)。

聽

能夠聽懂涉及三級話題任務內容、以較長單句和簡單複句為主的對話或一般性講話(300字以內)對話或講話發音基本標準、語音清晰、語速接近正常(不低於180字/分鐘)。能夠通過語音、語調、語速的變化等輔助手段理解和獲取主要資訊。

說

能夠掌握三級語言量化指標的音節,發音基本正確。能夠使用本級所涉及的詞彙和語法,完成相關的話題表達和交際任務。具備般的口頭表達能力,能夠使用少量較為複雜的句式進行簡單交流或討論。

讀

能夠確認讀三級語言量化指標涉及的音節、漢學和詞彙。能夠讀懂涉及本級話題任務的、語法基本不超出本級範圍的語言材料(300字以內)，閱讀速度不低於120字/分鐘。能夠理解簡單複句，讀懂敘述性、說明性等語言材料，理解文章大意和細節資訊。能夠利用字典、詞典等，理解生詞意義。初步具備略讀、跳讀等閱讀技能。

寫

能夠掌握初等手寫漢字表中的漢字300個。能夠較為熟練地掌握漢字筆劃和筆順的書寫規則以及各類標點符號的用法。能夠正確地抄寫漢字，速度不低於20字/分鐘。具備一般的書面表達能力，能夠進行簡單的書面交流，在規定時間內，書寫郵件、通知及敘述性的短文等，字數不低於200字。語句基本通順，表達基本清楚。
