2023 New HSK Level Breakdown - Skills required to pass the HSK Exam

According to Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education, below are the required skills and abilities for different levels in HSK.

HSK Elementary Level

Able to understand basic language materials and engage in effective social communication. Capable of expressing limited topics related to daily life, study, work, and social interactions. Can organize short paragraphs using common sentence patterns to complete simple communicative tasks. Utilizes basic communication strategies to assist in daily expression. Possesses preliminary understanding of Chinese cultural knowledge and basic cross-cultural communication abilities. Upon completing the elementary stage, should have mastered 608 syllables, 900 Chinese characters, 2245 words, and 210 grammar points, and be able to write 300 Chinese characters.

HSK Intermediate Level

Able to comprehend general language materials on various topics and engage in relatively fluent social communication. Capable of expressing basic paragraphs on relatively complex topics related to daily life, work, profession, and social culture. Utilizes common communication strategies. Possesses basic understanding of Chinese cultural knowledge and basic cross-cultural communication abilities. Upon completing the intermediate stage, should have mastered 908 syllables (adding 300), 1800 Chinese characters (adding 900), 5456 words (adding 3211), and 424 grammar points (adding 214), and be able to write 700 Chinese characters (adding 400).

HSK Advanced Level

Able to comprehend complex language materials on various topics and genres, engage in in-depth communication and discussions. Can engage in normative and appropriate social communication on complex topics related to social life, academic research, etc. Possesses clear logical thinking, rigorous structure, and coherent organization of passages. Utilizes various communication strategies flexibly. Possesses an in-depth understanding of Chinese cultural knowledge, international perspective, and advanced cross-cultural communication abilities. Upon completing the advanced stage, should have mastered 1110 syllables (adding 202), 3000 Chinese characters (adding 1200), 11092 words (adding 5636), and 572 grammar points (adding 148), and be able to write 1200 Chinese characters (adding 500).
